My Books

Becoming a published author is really a dream come true. Sometimes I wish I could get all my books out there at once. Then I remember: Oh, yeah, I have to write them first! Foo.

Have you ever wondered what would happen if the Disney Princesses got together?

The Sigmas of Midon is about what would happen if the Disney Princesses were in a college sorority together, with the Evil Queen and the other villainesses living next door, and Gaston and the other villains living across the street. The battle between good and evil is real in this modern, mixed-up fairy tale fantasy!

I wrote The Sigmas of Midon to be an apologist piece. What is an apologist piece? It is a paper or other work written in defense of an often controversial topic. If you ask the critics, the Disney Princesses are damaging to little girls and boys alike. In my book, I defend the Princesses from their harshest critics, proving wrong those who say that:

  • Cinderella is the most useless princess,
  • Beauty and the Beast is Stockholm Syndrome,
  • the (chaste) kisses used to wake Aurora and Snow White are morally wrong,
  • the main message of almost every Princess movie is “beauty is everything,”
  • many of the Disney Princesses do nothing but wait for a man to save them,
  • and the message of The Little Mermaid is “change for your man.”

The Sigmas of Midon is both a retelling of Disney’s princesses, and a continuation of their stories. But I didn’t just pull from Disney; I went to the original sources of the Grimm Brothers, Hans Christian Anderson, American history, Chinese legend, and Scottish folktales for certain elements of my story. My book brings fairy tales to a modern world in a new and fresh way; what if famous fairy tale characters were in a college sorority together?

Our heroines are the girls of the Sigma Beta Pi sorority. They are: Whit (Snow White), Bree (Belle), Pakwa (Pocahontas), Embry (Cinderella), Tia (Tiana), Rosie (Aurora), Rachel (Rapunzel), Andrea (Ariel), Jamila (Jasmine), Maggie (Merida), and Mei (Mulan).

And, of course, their lovely boyfriends or crushes: Freddy (Prince Ferdinand), Griffin (Beast), Sean (John Smith), Crew (Prince Charming), Neal (Prince Naveen), Patrick (Prince Phillip), Eldon (Flynn Rider), Richy (Prince Eric), Alan (Aladdin), Muir, MacArthur, and Douglas (MacIntosh, MacGuffin, and Dingwall), and Shane (Shang).

Next door live the Black Magic-using girls of the Gamma Tau Mu sorority, composed of Queenie (Evil Queen), Tracy, Annie, and Stella (Lady Tremaine, Anastasia, and Drizella), Malissa (Maleficent), Sula and Vanessa (Ursula and Vanessa), Trudy (the Matchmaker), and Maisie (Mother Gothel).

And across the street live the bad boys of the Alpha Deta Eta fraternity: Hunter (Huntsman), Gavin (Gaston), Jeff and Ian (Jafar and Iago), Folsom and Jethro (Flotsam and Jetsam), Red and Kody (Governor Ratcliffe and Kocoum), Yan (Shan Yu), Duke and Larry (Dr. Facilier and Lawrence), Stevens the Elder and Younger (Stabbington brothers), and Morgan (Mor’du).

The Gammas and the Alphas are up to nefarious stuff, and it’s up to the Sigmas to uncover their dark deeds!

The Sigmas of Midon has an audiobook, too! Each character is given their own “voice” and accent in this delightfully fun listen.

What would happen if Tiana, Cinderella, and Snow White wrote a cookbook together?

In The Sigmas of Midon, we meet Tia, Embry, and Whit. Those girls are Tiana, Cinderella, and Snow White in disguise. And they love to cook!

Reenter the world of Midon University with this companion cookbook to The Sigmas of Midon! Embry Miller, Tia James, and Whit Snow love to cook, and this is the cookbook they might have written together. Every dinner that Tia makes, every breakfast that Embry whips up, every dessert that Whit carefully bakes in The Sigmas of Midon are in this cookbook.

There are recipes for breakfasts, appetizers, main courses, side dishes, desserts, breads, and drinks. All told, there are about 80 recipes inside.

This cookbook is not meant for professional chefs, nor to win any awards. This cookbook is for friends and family and parents and children to cook together and find new favorite recipes. Many of the recipes are from my own recipe file, passed down from my mother. This book is every inch what Chef Gordon Ramsay meant when he said, “Cooking is not about being the best or most perfect cook, but rather it is about sharing the table with family and friends.”

Become immersed in Typeg, a country ruled by five Masters and built by thousands of slaves. Meet Tahira, a young woman who grew up as a slave, but who wants to be named the next healer to the slaves. Cry with her as she encounters disappointment after disappointment, but cheer when she somehow keeps up hope for a new dream: freedom.

That is, until Tahira’s Mistress takes her on an ocean voyage, and their ship is attacked by pirates. Captain Haefen seems every inch a cruel pirate as he takes Tahira aboard his ship with no inclination to tell her where he is taking her. And yet, as Tahira reluctantly gets to know him, she realizes that there’s more to this man than meets the eye.

Still, the pirates are dangerous. They engage in dueling, brawls, attempted murder, actual murder, mutiny, battles, attempted kidnapping, and marooning. Tahira has no choice but to live among them, kept safe by Captain Haefen’s stern word. But all she wants is to be free.

Set sail for an adventure unlike any you’ve ever read, taking inspiration from the first half of Cecil B. DeMille’s The Ten Commandments and the Golden Age of Piracy.

“Set Me Free” from FIVE MONTHS TO FREEDOM, written and performed by Nikki Anne Ellison

In Typeg, hope is very thin on the ground. The slaves are driven by the cruel whips of even crueler taskmasters. The work is back-breaking, difficult, and monotonous. But the slaves of Typeg—most of whom were stolen from their homes—have found one way of keeping up their hopes, and of defying the taskmasters: they sing slave songs.

One slave song in particular quickly becomes Tahira’s favorite. Simply entitled “Set Me Free,” this song serves as the catalyst for her new dream of freedom.

When Tahira is taken by pirates, and the promise of freedom snatched away from her once again, she turns to this song for comfort and for hope. And this song becomes one of the main driving forces of the plot. I wrote the lyrics and the music for the song, “Set Me Free.” The sheet music is included at the back of Five Months to Freedom.

This is a video of me singing and playing it, so you’ll know what it sounds like.
